James Lomas embarked with the 4th Reinforcements, 4th Battalion, H Company on 27 May 1916, four days earlier in Hastings he had married Mary McDowell on 23 May 1916. James was only 21 years old when he left his new wife Mary to fight in a war on the other side of the world.
On 19 September 1916 James found himself in the mud and desolation of the Somme with the Otago Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion. It was his 22nd birthday and I wonder if his thoughts were of Mary his new wife when he was dying of wounds received on the same day. James Lomas is remembered on a special memorial at the Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe.
