Private George Salmond was born in Queenstown the son of John and Sarah Salmond. Prior to enlisting on 31 May 1916 George was a postal clerk in Queenstown. Keen to use his telegraph skills he embarked with the 18th Reinforcements as part of the Specialist Signalling Section on 11 October 1916. A year and one day later George was killed in action at Passchendaele he was 23 years old, he is buried at Poelcapelle British Cemetery, Langemark-Poelkapelle, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
